Meet Gary, a 5-year-old rescue cat with one of the most popular Instagram profiles on the internet! This cat isn’t just any floof posing for pictures; he’s a genuine explorer who enjoys climbing, paddling, and meowntaineering.
“Gary enjoys our trips, and I strive to keep him happy and comfortable at all times,” said James, Gary’s owner and social media manager. Gary is gradually introduced to new hobbies, according to him, so the cat may adjust on his own time.
“However, I’ve created a bit of a monster,” James added, “because if I don’t take him out often enough, he sits at the door and meows.”
When questioned how Gary came to be a member of their family, James confessed that it was his partner’s actions that led to Gary’s adoption. “She chose him because he had suffered the same injury as his dog-brother Duke when they were both young and they were a matched pair,” he explained.
“They both had shattered left hips and were treated with a femoral head osteoectomy, which means the head of his femur was removed and his left hip joint was replaced with tendon and muscle rather than bone.
” As a result, the kitten can’t jump very high but else appears to be normal. Also, when at the shelter, Gary’s name was Bruce…after Bruce Wayne!

“We’ve just lately started exploring with Gary,” James explained. “We opted to harness train him when we moved since he showed a significant interest in going outdoors and even escaped once,” he continued. The decision was apparent, as not only may the traffic outside be hazardous, but there are other dangers hiding outdoors as well.
“As he became more comfortable on a leash, we began to embark on greater outings,” the owner said how Gary’s travels got started. The family began small, with their yard and local parks, before progressing to larger endeavors, such as full-day excursions in the mountains.
“This summer, we’ve expanded our activities to include paddleboarding and kayaking, camping, and even meowtaineering when he went on the glacier’s toe!” James looked enthralled by his cat’s exploits.
“It’s taken a few months, but Gary’s finally figured out the idea of hiking trails, and now he’ll follow one anytime he sees one,” the owner said of his kitty’s walks. Unfortunately, while it makes walking with Gary simpler, it has an unintended consequence.
