ISOLATED ISLAND

Socotra Island is one of the four major archipelagos of the Indian Ocean, isolated from the rest of the world. It has a hot, dry climate and was once part of Africa about 6 million years ago. The Socotra Islands include the islands: Socotra, Abd al Kuri, Samhah and Darsa, with a total area of about 3,800 square kilometers, belonging to the Republic of Yemen (Southwest Asia).

Socotra Island is located 240km east of Africa and 380km south of the Arabian peninsula. Called an island (formed by volcanic eruptions) but in fact, Socotra has a continental origin, so geologists have not found traces of volcanoes here.

According to scientists studying Socotra, many of the plants here are more than 20 million years old. There are hundreds of exclusive plant species on the island, some of which a third cannot grow anywhere in the world. In other words, Socotra is home to exotic plants.

Like the rich flora, Socotra has a unique fauna. Some birds are found only on the island and do not live elsewhere. In Socotra, there are cats with a much larger size than the usual ones, weighing up to 12 kg. They are believed to be descendants of feral cats brought here by the first settlers.

HERITAGE ISLAND

In 2008, UNESCO recognized Socotra as a World Natural Heritage Site, because of its unique and untouched beauty. Socotra boasts three ideal terrains, including coastal plains, limestone plateaus with caves, and the Haghier Mountains.
